Organic produced marbled steak Project leader Dzidra Kreišmane Team of project Inga Muižniece Duration 2019 - 2022 Research focus 4. Development and adaptation of technologies for obtaining high-value agricultural and forest products, as well as in veterinary medicine Source of funding National grant Project partners ZS “Atēnas”SIA AgrodatsSIA EcoonyxSIA EkodārzsSIA LLKC Struktūrvienība Limbažu konsultāciju birojs Description of project The aim of research to develop a new, most economically advantageous and fattening-efficient technology for the production of high-quality beef raised in an organic farming system, for the production of marbled steak. The tasks of project: • to create the most economically advantageous and most efficient crop rotation for fattening in the Organic system to reduce nutrient runoff and pollution caused by feed production,• to experimentally find the shortest optimal fattening period and method in groups of animals of different breeds and crosses in order to obtain the required fat class and marbled steak,• to develop precise - scientifically and economically justified feed rations, taking into account the indicators of the chemical composition of feed,• to promote cooperation between organic livestock and crop enterprises, developing these sectors as a whole, creating an opportunity to use the project results in crop farms for feed production and in livestock farms for breeding and fattening Limousin and Angus breed animals for obtaining high-quality meat, but indicatively also in farms breeding other beef cattle breeds in the organic farming system,• to perform economic calculations on the economic efficiency and cost of various research options, to compare them with the breeding methods and sales systems used in Latvia (livestock exporting, fattening dairy cows for meat, etc.).• Analysis of GHG mitigation measures, including the establishment of grasslands in organic soils.• Transfer of science to agricultural production.Experimentally finded the shortest optimal fattening period and method to obtain the required fat class and marbled steak, studying the intensive "Limousine" and less intensive "Aberdeen Angus" beef cattle breeds and crosses. Develop beef cattle fattening technologies, so that organically raised beef (including marbled steak) in Latvia would be available on the Latvian market and be able to compete in export markets.
