Jānis Liepiņš Academic position Now: Researcher at Latvian State Forest Institute ‘Silava’ Dr.silv. obtained in 2019 at LBTU Field of research 2. Preservation of biological diversity in agro- and forest biocenoses, ecosystem protection and services E-mail janis.liepins@silava.lv Dr.silv. Jānis Liepiņš is a researcher at the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava”, specializing in forest biomass modeling and carbon stock assessment. His research in this field began with his doctoral thesis, “Development of Methodology for Estimating Forest Stand Biomass and Carbon Stock Calculations in Latvia,” which he successfully defended in 2019 at the Faculty of Forestry, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU). During his doctoral studies, Dr. Liepiņš developed tree-level biomass equations specifically tailored to Latvian forests and ensured that national biomass and carbon stock estimates were aligned with international greenhouse gas reporting guidelines. In the postdoctoral phase, he continued his research by developing stand-level biomass equations that, for the first time in Latvia, accounted for the influence of dominant tree species. These tools were created in response to the practical needs of forest owners and managers, enabling a simplified assessment of how different forest management practices impact carbon sequestration. Dr. Liepiņš also developed innovative models illustrating spatial changes in basic wood density, providing a clear visual representation of biomass variation in tree stems, branches, and roots. From 2021 to 2024, he developed a globally unique method for assessing the impact of root rot on carbon stock in living biomass. His expertise is further confirmed by his certification as an official expert in the field of Agricultural, Forestry, and Veterinary Sciences – Agricultural and Fisheries Sciences, Forestry Science for the period 2023–2026. In addition, due to his growing international recognition, he has been appointed to the Reviewer Board of the international journal Forests, where he regularly provides high-quality peer reviews of manuscripts related to biomass research. Dr. Liepiņš is the author of 15 scientific publications indexed in Scopus and has an H-index of 8. The most important publications (2019-2025) J. Liepiņš , Ā. Jansons , (2024), A Comparative Study of Stem Rot Severity in Mature Deciduous Trees in Latvia, Sustainability, ISSN 2071-1050 J. Liepiņš , Ā.
